The Effect of Providing Error-Flagging Support During Testing

چکیده
We evaluated the effect of providing error-flagging, i.e., error detection but not error-correction support, during testing. We found that error-flagging is not a substitute for knowing the correct answer. It does not help students game the tutor. But, it does help students improve their test score.

Error-Flagging Support for Testing and Its Effect on Adaptation
The effect of providing error-flagging support during tests was studied in spring 2009 with two tutors on while and for loops. A partial crossover design was used for the study and mixed-factor ANOVA was used to analyze the students’ score per problem, number of revised problems, effect of revision on score and time spent per problem, and finally, the effect of errorflagging on adaptation and l...
متن کاملError-Flagging Support and Higher Test Scores
Previously, providing error-flagging support during tests was reported to lead to higher scores. A follow-up controlled study was conducted to examine why, using partial crossover design. Two adaptive tutors were used in fall 2009 and spring 2010, and the data collected during their pre-test stage was analyzed. The findings are: (1) When a student solves a problem correctly on the first attempt...
متن کاملThe Effects of Error-Flagging in a Tutor on Expression Evaluation
We evaluated the effect of providing error-flagging as support for error detection, but not error correction while the student is solving a problem. We found that providing error-flagging in addition to demand feedback during practice learning was no more effective than providing only demand feedback when the tutor did not explicitly mention that errors were being flagged. On the other hand, ex...
متن کاملLimiting the Number of Revisions while Providing Error-Flagging Support during Tests
Error-flagging support provided during tests leads to higher scores, as reported in literature. Although many beneficial factors contribute to higher scores, one undesirable contributing factor is that students abuse error-flagging feedback to find the correct answer through trial and error even when the test is not multiple-choice in nature. A limit can be placed on the number of revisions all...
